HAPPY BIRTHDAY
The days have gone, the months have gone,
Oh, how the years have flown.
Near children when we first were wed,
now many decades grown.
Another birthday touches you,
and writes your birthday rhyme.
Another time I sing your song
for lo! this umpteenth time.
I know not words to tell you right
the things I wish to say.
Old Father Time has dulled my wit
and robbed my voice away.
How can I speak and make it plain,
the essence of my thought?
I do not have the savoir faire
to say it like I ought.
