See and hear the author read this poem at:
I try to walk softly
when feelings are shown.
What starts as a pebble
can turn to a stone.
A word said in anger
can hurt to the bone:
too late to recover,
when already flown.
We find ourselves saying,
"If only I'd known",
the pain that I caused, when
too late to atone.
